This particular knife is one of my favorite finds in all those years I am dealing with edged weapons.
It is a custom made trench knife that was made as a souvenier to capturing of Riga in 1917.
I have got it from Germany, so after almost 100 years it has travelled back to the point on the Eastern front to that it was dedicated.
The knife is made out of the artillery shell splinter, it was a common practice to made souveniers and letter opener knives from spinters during WWI, but I have not encountered a full size trench knife made in this technique before.
I doubt that it could be effectivly used because the metal from which the artillery shells were made of is too soft to be used in knives without thermal treatment.
But in any case this is a wonderfull piece of history. The blade is signed "Erob. Rigas am 3. Sept. - 1917", the handle has a brass insert with the name of the maker or a person to whom this knife was presented.
The knife itself is in good condition, with some nicks on the edge and bent crossguard, I do not want to straighten the crossguard because I am afrait to damage it, so it will be up to the new owner to restore it or leave it as it is.
The scabbard has some surface rust damage with the leather strap suffering most out of all the parts.
The knife would be a wonderfull addition to any trench knife or WWI souvieniers or trench art collections.
